Peter Agris Memorial Journalism/Communications Awards
mark 33rd year of grants to Greek Americans

~ March 31 deadline for $5,000 communications grants ~

BOSTON - Through a partnership of the Alpha Omega Council and the Agris Family to honor the memory of late veteran journalist Peter Agris, 160 aspiring Hellenic journalists have received grants totaling $800,000.

These proud Greek American communications professionals serve as anchors in news markets across this nation, correspondents covering wars and politics at home and abroad, press officers at the State Department and on Capitol Hill, authors, documentary film producers, and teaching future journalists. They report for and contribute to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, CNN, Frontline, NPR, 60 Minutes, National Geographic, The History Channel, The Atlantic, Nightline, Fodors and others.

The founder of Alpha Omega and publisher of The Hellenic Chronicle, for fifty years the premier Greek American national English-language national weekly newspaper in this country, Agris died in 1989. He was an Archon of the Greek Orthodox Church, a trustee of Hellenic College/Holy Cross School of Theology, Anatolia College, The American College of Greece, and an Ahepan.

“When the program started, no one realized the impact it would have on Greek Americans in journalism. Seeing our recipients reporting on television and in print around the country should make us all proud to have contributed in a small way to their success,” said Peter Lemonias, Committee President.

“What began in 1993 as a tribute to my father’s vision as founder of Alpha Omega and his passion for journalism in establishing the first fully English language newspaper for assimilating Greek Americans has produced something even greater – the only network of Hellenic communications and media professionals in the US. We take pride in having helped these dynamic young Hellenes further their dreams and honor their heritage and faith in the process.” Nancy Agris Savage, Executive Director.

Criteria include Greek American heritage; U.S. citizenship; current full-time enrollment as journalism/communications/media majors at the graduate/undergraduate level in an accredited college or university in the US; active participation in school, community, church organizations; a minimum 3.0 GPA and financial need.
