Educator Cindy Calder

We welcome the amazing Cindy Calder to the show! Cindy moved to Greece with her parents and two brothers in 1965. Her father was a US diplomat and Greek specialist stationed in Athens and Thessaloniki during various postings from 1963-1980. She attended elementary and high school at the American Community School in Athens.

After leaving Greece to attend Dartmouth College, Cindy worked for 10 years as an international banker with many clients based in Greece. After leaving banking, Cindy began a second career as a translator and teacher on her way to earning a Master's Degree in Classics from Columbia University.  In 2012, Cindy founded Calder Classics to bring high school students beginning and advanced programming in Greek and Latin and the art, history, and literature associated with ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Her founding principle is that the study of the Classics, when combined with first-hand engagement with art, history, literature, and modern culture, enriches students’ academic experience and encourages adults to reconnect with the joys of learning. At Calder Classics, mixing students of all ages and backgrounds in a shared learning environment has proven intellectually stimulating in wonderfully unexpected ways. Cindy taught Latin at the Trinity School, the Brearley School, and Saint Joseph High School in New York City, and has led many ancient Greek and Latin courses for Calder Classics in-person, online, and in one-on-one tutoring. Over the years her students have gone on to impressive and diverse academic and professional careers.  She is on the Board of the Calder Classics Scholarship Fund which raises money to fund tuition and travel expenses for inner city students to attend her programs. Cindy lives with her husband in Massachusetts and is the mother of four grown children.
